Designer Whey products contain extremely low levels of lactose (less than 3%), much lower than the levels reported to cause discomfort in people with lactose intolerance.
A small number of people are also allergic to milk proteins and the majority of these individuals are sensitive to casein. Designer Whey, however, does not contain any casein. Other individuals may be allergic to other milk proteins, such as lactoglobulin, which are contained in whey.
All Designer Whey products are 97% lactose free and suitable for most anyone with lactose intolerances.

We have found that adding the protein to water usually solves dispersion problems. It is very important to stir vigorously for 30 seconds as described on the label in order to obtain optimal consistency.
The red spots are annatto, a natural food coloring agent that is used in many foods. It is used at a very low concentration in the Designer Whey Protein Powder in French Vanilla and Vanilla Praline, but if there are some larger specks they may appear red in color.
All Designer Whey products should be stored in a cool place, but the powders do not require refrigeration. Once they have been mixed with water or milk, they should be consumed within 30 minutes. Our pre-made products do not require refrigeration until opened.
“Denaturation” can affect the biological value (i.e., bioavailability) of protein and may slow digestion and absorption. But denatured protein will still retain its full nutritional value and amino acid composition.
Designer Whey contains virtually all non-denatured protein. However, exposing it to extreme temperature may cause some denaturation. For example, heating whey to temperatures above 140˚ Fahrenheit (60˚ Celsius) or repeated freezing and thawing. This, however, does not mean that the amount of protein in the product is diminished.
Designer Whey is an excellent source of all essential and non-essential amino acids. As such, even if it is denatured, it is still a very high-quality protein source.

The answer is going to require a little math homework but I’ll try to keep it simple. For weight loss, I find that people do best when they consume about 25-30% of their total calories from protein.
Most active women require around 1500 calories per day for weight loss.
= 1,500 calories x 25% = 375 calories from protein ÷ 4 (calories per gram of protein) = 93.75 grams of protein/day
Most active men require 1800-2000 calories per day for weight loss.
= 1,800 calories x 25% = 450 calories from protein ÷ 4 (calories per gram of protein) = 112.5 grams of protein/day
You can also calculate protein needs by weight, but this is more complicated and requires more math if you are overweight or obese. The government’s RDA (recommended daily allowance) for protein intake is 0.8 grams per kg (1 kg = 2.2 pounds), which is considered the amount sufficient to meet the needs of nearly all (97.5%) healthy men and women age 19 years and older. However most experts believe that for active individuals who are exercising regularly or attempting to build muscle, this level of protein is not adequate. The National Strength and Conditioning Association and the International Society of Sports Nutrition recommend that athletes consume 1.5 to 2.0 g/kg of body weight of protein (athletes involved in moderate training should stay at the lower end of this range) and the American Dietetic Association recommends 1.2 – 1.7 g/kg/day for individuals involved in weight training. These recommendations are based on normal weight individuals, so if you are trying to lose weight and choose to use this method for calculating daily protein requirements, you have to calculate the average of your current weight and your ideal body weight to figure out your daily protein requirements by weight.
1. Figure out your Ideal Body Weight (IBW) using this equation
Males = 106 lbs for first 5’ of height
+ 6 lbs for each inch over 5’
Females = 100 lbs for first 5’ in height
+ 5 lbs for each inch over 5’
For small frames: deduct 10%
For large frames: add 10%
2. (Current weight + IBW) ÷ 2 = Weight to use for protein requirements
3. Divide weight for protein requirements by 2.2 to convert to Kg.
4. Multiply this weight in Kg x 1.5 g = grams of protein per day
Protein helps satisfy hunger better than carbs or fat, can help stabilize blood sugar levels, and helps protect or build muscle. Your protein intake should be evenly distributed throughout the day for optimal results in terms of losing fat and gaining muscle. I recommend that you use the designer whey scoop after your workout for best results. You can also use your scoop to make a healthy breakfast smoothie or afternoon snack (there are lots of great recipes on this site), but I don’t recommend getting all of your daily protein needs from protein powder. To get all the nutrients your body needs to function at its best, make sure that you incorporate other healthful sources of lean protein like eggs/egg whites, poultry without the skin, lean meat, fish, low fat or fat free dairy (Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, milk, cheese) and plant based proteins like tofu, soy products, nuts, seeds, and legumes (lentils, beans, peas).
It is all about calories in and calories out.
Depending on what you add into your Designer Whey shake will determine how manycalories it provides. For example, mixing Designer Whey French Vanillainto a cup of almond milk is a delicious snack with loads of nutrients for only150 calories (one serving of Designer Whey protein powder is 100 calories andalmond milk is around 50 calories per serving – depending on the brand). If you add fruit and/or greens into your shake, the calorie count will increase.
If your shake replaces a meal, then make sure that the rest of your meals/snacks meet/do not exceed the remaining calories you want in a day.
If you are very active and exercise regularly, your body needs the extra calories and protein to recover and build muscle.

Whey is the liquid component of cows’ milk, which is separated from the solid component, curd, during the cheese-making process. Natural whey contains water, protein, fat, minerals, and lactose.
Whey products are produced when the protein elements are separated through special filtering processes or by ion exchange. This process removes the lactose and fat and leaves a highly concentrated protein that is dried into a highly functional protein powder. Ion exchange isolates the protein from the lactose and fat due to its electrical charge.
The two main types of whey protein on the market are whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate. Whey concentrate ranges from 19-89% protein, typically 80%, and whey isolate contains at least 90% protein. Whey protein is a high quality, complete protein and contains all nine essential amino acids, the building blocks of healthy muscles, skin, nails, and other body tissues.
Proteins are the basic building blocks of life. It provides your body with the amino acids it needs to grow and repair muscle tissue, along with the necessary components to keep your immune system healthy and make hormones, enzymes, skin, hair, nails, organs, and blood.
How much protein do I need on a daily basis?
Several factors affect how much protein your body needs, including age, height, weight, metabolic rate, exercise level, stress factors, sleep patterns, and the quality and quantity of food intake.
In order to achieve significant muscle growth while using protein powders, you must lift weights on a regular basis. A recommended regimen includes training 3-4 days a week, resting prudently, avoiding overtraining, and eating right. If you stick to this program, you may see results in as little as six weeks. Continuing this regimen for 48 weeks a year, for at least 3 or 4 years, will help you attain the desired muscular definition.
Scientists have various methods of measuring protein quality. Biological Value (BV) is a measure of a particular protein’s effect on nitrogen balance. The protein digestibility corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS) is a measure of how well a particular protein supplies the nine essential amino acids. Whey protein digestibility corrected amino acid score is 1.14, as compared to 0.94 for beef protein, and its BV is 104, compared to 100 for eggs. In addition, whey protein empties from the stomach and is absorbed into the bloodstream from the intestine faster than other proteins. Due to whey’s quick digestion it has been called the “fast protein” and is the preferred protein to flood the body with amino acids so muscles can recover quicker. Moreover, whey protein contains especially high concentrations of the branched chain amino acids that are metabolized at high rates during exercise, most notably valine, isoleucine, and leucine.
While both are natural dairy products, milk contains roughly 3.3% protein that is comprised of 80% casein protein and 20% whey protein. In addition, milk contains lactose and fat. This is removed in skim milk. Whey protein is extracted from milk, leaving the lesser protein, casein, and eliminating most of the lactose and fat.
Full spectrum whey peptides are Designer Whey’s proprietary blend of a complete spectrum of very low, low, medium, and high molecular weight whey peptides. These peptides make up the major and minor fractions of specially prepared whey protein.

Bovine serum albumin (BSA) gets its name from the Latin name for whey, serum lactis. It is a naturally occurring minor protein/peptide found in whey protein, and therefore, in cow’s milk as well. If you currently drink cow’s milk, you are consuming BSA.
Further, BSA is one of the protein fractions that make whey protein so uniquely beneficial. It is rich in cysteine residues that are necessary for the production of glutathione, the body’s most important antioxidant. Research shows that glutathione acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells against free radicals that can cause cancer and accelerate aging. Glutathione may also help to enhance your immune system.
Lo Han Guo is the fruit of Momordica Grosvenori, a plant cultivated in the mountains of southern China. Mogrosides, which are water-extracted from the Lo Han fruit, offer a pleasant, sweet taste without elevating blood sugar. Lo Han Guo Mogrosides are non-caloric and are said to have the sweetening potency equal to 250 times that of table sugar.
Why is there cholesterol in whey protein?
Since Designer Whey products are predominately animal-sourced, they contain a small quantity of naturally occurring dietary cholesterol. Cholesterol is a fatty substance and is necessary for the synthesis of sex hormones, bile acids, and Vitamin D, and forms the structure of every cell in your body. Consequently, cholesterol is essential to life. Furthermore, research suggests that saturated fats are twice as powerful in raising blood cholesterol levels as polyunsaturated fats are in lowering them, while dietary cholesterol has a smaller effect on blood cholesterol levels.
Whey protein has been shown to lower cholesterol levels in a number of clinical studies. Moreover, certain bioactive components in whey protein may be responsible for the cholesterol reduction.
There is no scientific evidence that high protein intake causes kidney problems, even among body builders that consume 300-500g per day for a period of months. One study looked at the effects of a high protein intake on markers of safety in 20 healthy resistance-trained males. The subjects consumed 1.3 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight daily, 3.6 times greater than the amount recommended by the RDI. After 28 days, the researchers concluded that the daily high protein intake had no untoward or negative effects on the immune system or on renal and hepatic function, nor did it induce ketosis or dehydration. Other studies included feeding animals a high-protein diet for more than half their lifetime, but showed no kidney damage.
High protein intake may be hazardous only for individuals with abnormal kidney function or kidney disease. And yet many people with kidney dysfunction actually use Designer Whey to aid their rehabilitation. It is low in phosphorus, potassium, and carbohydrates, and high in biological value, can be mixed in a small amount of fluid, and is easily consumed.
For the disease-free individual, the biggest concern with high protein intake is dehydration, because it requires a significant amount of water to metabolize protein. This effect is easily avoided by drinking eight or more cups of water per day.
Oligofructose is a natural, soluble dietary fiber used for flavor and is derived from Chicory root (100% vegetable). Sometimes labeled as a dietary fiber, it is partially absorbed and has a caloric value less than half of starch or glucose. Studies have shown it can enhance the absorption of minerals such as calcium.
How is the soy protein in Aria made? Does it contain any harmful chemicals that can sometimes be found in some soy proteins?
The soy in ARIA is water extracted and we never use hexane-sourced soy protein, which can be harmful.
Whey protein is derived from milk (and therefore classified as an animal protein). It is a complete protein in that it contains all the essential amino acids needed to sustain all the body functions we need. Soy protein is derived from soybeans (and therefore classified as a plant-protein). It is an incomplete protein in that it does not contain enough of all the essential amino acids your body needs to function, but more importantly, to replenish/recover from workouts. Your body will have to find those amino acids in other ways (from food consumed or breaking down unused muscles). For example, it is low in “methionine” which helps with metabolic processes, breaks down fat, and helps the body remove heavy metals. Soy protein, on the other hand, contains hidden proteins (isoflavones) that can mimic the activity of estrogen in the body, particularly beneficial for pre and peri-menopausal conditions. Additionally, the body does not absorb soy as quick as whey, but that is not a bad thing. Soy takes a little longer to be digested so it takes more time to provide the same amount of amino acids as whey. However, the level of amino acids
is sustained over a longer period (think “slow release”) so you feel fuller longer – often used by individuals looking to manage their weight.
