Whey History

Time-tested. Athlete-approved.

The history of whey dates back more than 8,000 years and is intertwined with the history of cheese! In fact, it is a byproduct of the cheese-making process.

6,000 B.C.

Whey is invented accidentally. When goats’ or cows’ milk goes sour, the curd and whey separate naturally. These curds represent the earliest known cheeses.

420 B.C.

The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, known as the father of modern medicine, lauds the health-boosting properties of whey. “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food,” he once said.

1650

A liquid form of whey is invented and consumed as a health tonic in Italy, England, and other nearby countries.

1930

Dairy magnate James Lewis Kraft commissions scientific research on the health benefits of whey. Researchers at Rutgers University find that whey boasts a high mineral content and is an effective treatment for rickets and tuberculosis.

1993

The first instant, flavored powdered whey drink mix is brought to market touting the brand name Designer Whey®. Almost instantly, it becomes popular among bodybuilders, athletes, and fitness enthusiasts.
