Strong is the New Beautiful

by Bonnie Pfiester

Most women would admit they like power just like men. The thrill of driving a powerful car, or using a power tool, can be fun for a chick. A woman changing her own tire is pretty cool too. Even a career woman doing a man’s job is inspiring.

If this weren’t true, Hollywood would look a much different.  Can you imagine a man replacing Farrah Fawcett in “Charlie’s Angels”, or a guy trying to fill Angelina Jolie’s high heel shoes in “Wanted”? It just wouldn’t be the same. Tough chicks are in high demand. Men like to watch them, and women want to be them. So if women secretly wish they could be powerful and tough, why aren’t more women working on it?

Admittedly, tough training is catching on. As the fitness world continues to move in a more intense training direction, there are more women training harder than ever before. Ladies are skipping traditional 5Ks to do races like the Tough Mudder and Warrior Dash – and they love it. Even still, the majority of women are so focused on fat they neglect their muscles.

5 reasons why women don’t hit the iron:

1. Women are scared of bulking up. Strength training doesn’t necessarily mean bodybuilding. Bodybuilding requires food and supplements to encourage bulking up. Gaining mass rarely happens on it’s own so you can throw that fear out the window. If you avoid weights, you avoid improving your metabolism, strength, conditioning, muscle tone, confidence, physical ability and mobility.

2. Women don’t know their own strength. Women can go years lifting pink rubberized mini-size dumbbells, calling it weight training. Most women never even try lifting heavier weights. If women only knew their own strength, they’d be training a lot harder.

3. Women don’t like to feel weak. As women increase weight, it exposes your weakness. Struggling to push a heavier weight can be frustrating and humbling, but it’s the only way you get stronger. If you never challenge your body, you’ll never change it.

4. Women think it’s too late. Strength training has no age limit. Whether you’re eighteen or eighty, you can enjoy the benefits of working your muscles. Truthfully, it is even more important to incorporate purposeful strength training in your fitness routine as you get older.

5. Women lack confidence in the weight room. Guys normally get their first experience lifting weights in school sports, so men are typically more comfortable around weights. Women, however, can go their entire life without even seeing their first squat rack, making the weight room a scary place for a lady. Weight training does require some education, but that’s what trainers and fit friends are for. The more a woman learns the more confident they will become.

Being fit is not just about getting skinny, it’s about getting strong and healthy – and doing things you never thought possible.
